NEW YORK — Hyperliquid (HYPE) is executing the largest live token buyback program in the cryptocurrency sector, having retired more than $825 million worth of tokens through its Assistance Fund (AF) as of May 2026, at an annualized run-rate of $517 million.

The on-chain perpetual exchange routed approximately 82% of its trading fees into a dead-address burn mechanism over the past year, effectively creating a buyback yield of 3.5% on the token’s $14.6 billion market capitalization.

HYPE is trading at $43.70 relative to a circulating supply of 333.9 million tokens, with a fully diluted valuation of $43.7 billion across a total supply of 1 billion. Platform data shows 30-day daily volume averaging $6.34 billion, with daily fees of $1.67 million translating to annualized revenue of $609 million.

Buyback Mechanics vs. Unlock Schedule

The Assistance Fund’s $517 million annualized retirement rate exceeds the forward unlock schedule of 9.92 million tokens per month, though risks remain on the 12-month horizon. Core contributor unlocks total approximately 119 million tokens annually — roughly ten times the AF retirement volume of ~11 million tokens per year.

“The buyback program represents unprecedented capital deployment in DeFi,” said Elton Shehdula, Research at Allium, in its single-page analysis of Hyperliquid published May 8, 2026.

HIP3: Tokenized Equity Perps Gain Traction

Hyperliquid’s HIP3 protocol, which enables tokenized equities to trade as perpetual contracts, now accounts for roughly 33.5% of total platform volume seven months after launch. Traders can access WTI crude, S&P 500 index, NVIDIA, and Tesla contracts around the clock from a crypto wallet.

Concentration risk persists: a single deployer identified as “xyz” operates approximately 92% of HIP3 volume across the platform.

Valuation Perspective

At 24x enterprise value to fees, HYPE trades between traditional exchange operators — sitting above CME Group’s 19.6x multiple but below Robinhood Markets’ 27.6x reading. On a fully-diluted basis, the multiple expands to 71.8x, though 455.8 million tokens remain in the foundation reserve with no near-term distribution timeline announced.

The token’s HLP Vault currently holds $262 million in total value locked, with a 43% staking ratio indicating significant holder participation.
